Respirator Fit Testing | Your Safety DepartmentSM

The purpose of a fit test is to ensure that the respirator forms an adequate seal with the respirator user's face to provide the intended protection. The respirator user must be fit tested for each type of respirator specified by the safety data sheet (SDS) or product labeling before using the respirator and will then be fit tested every 12 months thereafter.

The fit test must be conducted using the exact make, model, style, and size of the respirator that will be used by the employee. If there are any changes in respirator requirements, or a person has a change in weight, dental work, or facial disfigurements that could affect the fit, that person must be fit tested again.

The employee will undergo a Medical Evaluation using a Questionnaire that a physician reviews to approve or limit a user from wearing a respirator. The employee will also be trained on the use of the respirator, limitations, and program requirements. The employee will then be Quantitatively tested using a TSI PortaCount to ensure a proper fit.
